Our Place Events & Activities

September - December 2011

You are very welcome to any of these events at Our Place, the centre in Bristol for families who foster and adopt.  All events are without charge. 

We can provide childcare during events if you let us know well in advance.

September 2011
Tuesday Tots 1 – 4 yrs Friday Tots

6th, 13th, 20th, 27th September

9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th September

Our Toddler groups offer children a chance to play with one another while parents/carers also share time and experiences together.  We emphasise a full range of playing, including  music, books, water, sand, crafts as well as free time to play with toys of one’s choosing.

We need to know if and when you are coming, so please always sign up in advance.

 

Wednesday After School Group 5 yrs +  

14th, 21st, 28th September

3:30 – 5:00

 

The After School group gives children a chance to play in a safe and structured environment in which social skills are emphasised.  The afternoon includes crafts, cooking, reading, music, drama and games.  It is a time to relax after a long school day, to make friends and to think creatively. 

We need to know if and when you are coming, so please always sign up in advance.

 

Tutoring 7 yrs + Sara Mayne

14th, 21st, 28th September

3:30 - 5:00

 

Sara is available to support children who would like to develop their confidence at school.  She will help students to make progress in academic achievement as well as encouraging them to think of themselves as able learners.

Please phone to speak with Sara about your child’s educational needs. 

Alternative days may be available for individual tuition.

 

Parents of Late Teens

This is a group for parents/carers of children who are 15 yrs + who would like to discuss issues surrounding the development of their adolescent and post-adolescent young people.

Wednesday 21st September 10:00 - 12:30  

Parents and Carers have asked fir activities for themselves.  This is it!  Come make your own designs to take home while you learn a new skill and chat with other adults! (See hanging glass designs in our front window as an example.)

"Can't Do or Won't Do?" Maggie Pitts
Wednesday 12th October 10:30 - 12:00  

Maggie Pitts from CCS Adoption will offer a workshop on understanding the impact of living and caring for traumatised children in their early years of adoption and beyond.  All adopters, foster carers and professionals working with adopted and looked after children are welcome to attend this important workshop which Our Place and CCS Adoption are co-sponsoring.

Half-Term Activities

 

Make Your Own Music & Re-use, Re-cycle, Re-vamp your old clothes

5 - 12 yrs

Tuesday 25th October

 10:00 – 2:00

What a day of creativity for everyone!   You will be making music to fit your mood for half the day and bringing in your own cast-away clothes and trainers to design them like new again for the other half the day.  Your individual personality has a real chance to shine today in both music and art.

 

Autumn Sculpture on the Downs 6 - 12 yrs

Wednesday 26th October

 10:00 – 2:00

Another day to express your creativity, but today it is outdoors and with natural elements in the environment.  You will be making wildlife sculptures with autumn leaves and autumn colours and your great imaginations – with a chance to check out your favourite animals at the Zoo in the afternoon.

This is another great chance for parents and carers to get together to learn or to perfect a new skill.  Don’t pay for those lovely felt flowers you see on garments because you can learn how to make them yourself at Our Place!

Inter-Country Adoption Coffee Morning Sue Lytton
Thursday 24th November 10:00 - 12:00  

for parents who have adopted from overseas

Sue will join parents of adopted from overseas children who would like to come to Our Place for a morning of coffee and chat.  We have a couple of new films about overseas adoption which you may want to watch. Children under 4 yrs are welcome to come, and there will be a crèche.

The Tragedy and Trauma of Emotional Neglect - and how to do something about it. Randy Comfort

Emotional neglect can be a bit like learning disorders in tat they are both "hidden handicaps" and there are no visible scars.  Nevertheless, emotional neglect can take a huge toll on a child.  Early intervention and understanding will enable your child to develop more comfortably in the family.
